Abstract Expressionism and Me
Abstract expressionism was an American post–world war II art movement. It was the first specifically American movement to achieve worldwide influence and also the one that put New York City at the center of the art world, a role formerly filled by Paris. Europeans believed Americans were heroic and brilliant because of the impact they had on WWII.
It is critical for the understanding of this emotionally charged art movement to place it in historical context. Abstract Expressionism developed in an era where quantum mechanics and psychoanalysis were beginning to take root and change the entire human civilization’s understating of the world and increase self-consciousness and personal awareness. Many artist attempted to detract themselves from the portrayal of objects and instead tried to tantalize the emotions of the viewer. "Action Art" took this a step further, using Carl Yung and Sigmund Freud’s ideas of the unconscious as its basic foundation for expression of hidden feelings. The Work of the Abstract Expressionists was not meant to define certain images and likewise was not meant to stimulate present emotional reactions. However, there desire was to touch the viewers deep unconscious feelings. This was done by the Artist working "unconsciously with no self-imposed restrictions''. Perhaps this overview will set the stage for a more through understanding of past and present Art consciousness. As a student of Abstract Expressionism I know I have found a profound, pleasing and satisfying sense of my Art world on a much deeper level knowing the history which preceded me.
All of my Art Pieces are unique and basically made from "soft steel". I scavenge the material I use in every piece from the excesses from local metal fabricators and metal recycling yards. I never quite know what shape the pieces I find will look like when assembled. I primarily use an ARC welder with various sizes of ‘’rod " to attach the steel permanently together. I have no preconceived idea when I begin a sculpture, as all the work is spontaneous, reactionary and emotionally charged. The steel Art, when left out in the elements, will begin to rust and take on a Patina tone. I encourage watering in the first year of birth, as this will help the rusting process. Contact with Mother Earth will not harm the work , so feel free to place it on the ground. The life expectancy is unknown. I suspect I will be very dead by the time it completely decays, so put the Art sculptures in your Estate!
I am also available to create specially designed sculptures. I don’t guarantee the outcome because of the aforementioned, but I am very capable of sensing the appropriate application and desire of the person. Please contact me personally at 495-6201 for delivery and orders!
